Established as physic gardens in the sixteenth century for the study of medicinal plants, botanical gardens later became, during the era of European colonial expansion, hubs for the exchange and distribution of species collected from conquered territories. By the end of the twentieth century, reflecting growing concern over biodiversity loss, their mission shifted toward conservation.
Throughout their history, botanical gardens have continually changed in purpose and meaning, reflecting the evolving ways in which humans have perceived, classified, and related to the natural world. In different historical periods, they have embodied different ideas and values, mirroring changing conceptions of nature and humanity's place within it.
The images in this work emerge as a personal interpretation of ex situ flora, viewed through the lens of the meanings that have been projected onto it over time: dark and mysterious, picturesque, exotic, domesticated, and ultimately, fragile.
